Goo Goo Dolls, Michelle Branch Make Interesting Night of Tunes

Goo Goo Dolls, Michelle Branch Make Interesting Night of Tunes

Goo Goo Dolls took to the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater stage Sunday, August 7, along with Michelle Branch and Parachute.

Parachute took the stage first and played their original songs as well as the cover, "One Headlight" by the Wallflowers.

Michelle Branch started off with "Everywhere", her first major label hit. The single was from The Spirit Room and a majority of her set list consisted from this album. She did a good job at blending her new songs with her more recognizable ones. The Goo Goo Dolls had less seamless transitions between their songs but still provided a memorable set.

First, the Goos rolled out their 1998 hit, "Slide" that brought the crowd to their feet.

The Goos swayed away from their adult contemporary hits when bassist and vocalist, Robby Takac, took the lead on several, fast paced, more punk infused songs.

ADOPT A PET: Meet Kona

ADOPT A PET: Meet Kona

ATLANTA - If you dream of coming home to a wet nose, wagging tail and tons of kisses (in addition to, perhaps, a half-chewed shoe or an overturned trashcan) adopt a puppy from your local Humane Society. According to the ASPCA, approximately 5 million to 7 million domesticated animals enter animal shelters nationwide, every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized. However, you can change those numbers by adopting a "companion" for yourself or for your family. Pets are an investment but, in our opinion, an investment well worth the money.

Kona is almost a year old and she's a Lab mix. She is a puppy and is small, now, but she will probably get considerably larger. She’s black and white with short hair, so shedding won’t be an issue. According to the Humane Society, her previous owners said she doesn’t respond well to men. She is a sweet dog and will require lots of training to be her best.

How to avoid the Downtown Connector backups

How to avoid the Downtown Connector backups

UPDATE: Crews in Atlanta are removing the remainder of a bridge railing that rained heavy steel beams onto downtown lanes of Interstate 75.

Georgia Department of Transportation spokesman Mark McKinnon said Sunday afternoon the work should be finished before rush hour Monday morning. If it's not done, he says, crews will pause for several hours during the peak commute.

ATLANTA - Damage to the railing on the 17th Street Bridge rained debris onto the Downtown Connector late Saturday night, forcing the detour of traffic around that busy interstate highway.

With many events, including an Atlanta Braves game going on today, traffic on the Connector is expected to remain heavy. We've got ways for you to get around the mess.

Calera, AL - Police in Calera, Alabama say they arrested two men early Saturday morning shortly after a Waffle House was robbed.   The two are thought to be involved in a series of Waffle House robberies that stretched from Atlanta to Alabama.  There have been 18 robberies since July 27.

Calera police say 21 year old Edwin Mitchell and 19 year old Deangelo Heard were both caught leaving the scene of the robbery.  A pistol used in the hold up was also recovered.  Both men are from Ellenwood, Ga.

They are being held in the Shelby County, Alabama Jail on charges of first degree robbery, theft of property, and second degree attempted robbery charges.

Earlier robberies occurred in six metro counties and near the Alabama border in Lagrange, Ga. and Auburn, Ala.  There were robberies in Cobb County on Thursday, and in Gwinnett County on Friday.

Metro Atlanta still growing despite economy

Metro Atlanta still growing despite economy

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) estimates that the Atlanta region added some 34,550 people between Apr. 1, 2010 and Apr. 1, 2011.

This marks the third consecutive year of slower-than-normal growth when compared to what the region experienced from 2000 to 2007.

"Although slower, this pace is impressive in the face of the economic pressures we face," said Tad Leithead, ARC chairman. "This gives us a chance to catch our breath while we plan for the more rapid growth we project and which we've experienced during the last two decades."

Metro Atlanta has added approximately 91,000 people during the past three years. During the 2000s, it routinely added more than 100,000 people each year.

Future of State Health Benefit Plan to be secured

Future of State Health Benefit Plan to be secured

ATLANTA -- The Georgia Department of Community Health has adopted a proposal to secure the future of the State Health Benefit Plan (SHBP).

The initiative introduces a new consumer-directed wellness plan, improves plan administration, eliminates the SHBP's projected deficit for this year and substantially reduces future deficits.

"The board is pleased to endorse this thoughtful and responsible plan that is not afraid to tackle the big issues," said DCH board chairman Ross Mason. "This is a forward-looking plan that provides real bottom line-driven solutions."

SHBP is facing a projected deficit of slightly more than $800 million during the next two years.

"Our major concern is the continued delivery of quality health care services at an affordable cost," said DCH commissioner David Cook.
