Fulton County School Among Blue Ribbon Winners

ATLANTA, GA -- Six Georgia public schools were named 2010 National Blue Ribbon Schools today.

"These six schools are outstanding examples of how high expectations and hard work can lead to outstanding student achievement," said State Superintendent of Schools Brad Bryant. "These schools show that, regardless of a school's size, geography or demographics, all students can achieve at high levels."

The No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools award distinguishes and honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap.

Village Tavern Joins the Great American Dine Out

ALPHARETTA, GA -- Village Tavern is proud to announce its participation in Share Our Strength's Great American Dine Out, a weeklong national restaurant event in cities across the United States. From Sept. 19-25, thousands of restaurants, including Village Tavern, will join together in raising funds to support No Kid Hungry, Share Our Strength's national campaign to end childhood hunger in America by 2015.

Millions of consumers play a vital role in this initiative; their choice to dine out at participating restaurants will help feed children in need all across America. Nearly 17 million American children -- almost one of every four -- lack the resources to put healthy meals on the table every day.

Firemen Appreciation Day at Chick-fil-A

ALPHARETTA, GA -- The Chick-fil-A restaurant at Alpharetta Commons is hosting a Firemen Appreciation Day on Saturday, Sept. 18 in honor of the dedicated firefighters working to keep the Alpharetta community safe.

The restaurant will donate 50 cents of every Chick-fil-A Spicy Chicken Sandwich sold on the 18th to the Alpharetta Fire Department's Boot Drive. The Boot Drive will benefit the Georgia Firefighters Burn Foundation.

During Firemen Appreciation Day, Chick-fil-A will feature interactive activities for children in its parking lot from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., including an inflatable castle and a mobile fire education house courtesy of the Alpharetta Fire Department.

'Secure Communities' Rolls Out in Cobb, Fulton Counties

MARIETTA, GA -- A new federal program is going into effect in Cobb and Fulton Counties.  The program screens the fingerprints of people who are arrested against a national database, in an effort to verify their immigration status.  It's drawing praise and criticism.

Fingerprints are one of the few distinguishing features almost all of us have.  Being fingerprinted is an activity widely associated with being arrested for committing a crime.

Now, a new program, called Secure Communities, will run the fingerprints of those arrested, against a national database to check an inmate's immigration status.

IronKids Alpharetta Triathlon is Almost Here

ALPHARETTA, GA -- On Sunday, September 12, IronKids will hold the second annual IronKids Alpharetta Triathlon, drawing youth ranging from six to 15 years of age.

The event, taking place at Wills Park, will include five divisions: Ages 6-8, Ages 9-11, Ages 12-15, Military and Teams. The Military division will allow children of United States Armed Forces members to compete against each other within the three age groups. The Teams division allows a sports team, club or school that has youth triathletes to compete as a team in the event. A trophy will be awarded to the coach of the top finishing team.

Participants aged 12-15 will begin at 7:00 a.m. with a swim in the outdoor pool. Athletes will then bike on closed roads and run on paved walkways and grass throughout the park.

Alpharetta DPS Announces Safety Checkpoint Results

ALPHARETTA, GA -- The Alpharetta Department of Public Safety is announcing the results from two safety checkpoints recently held in the cities of Alpharetta and Milton.

Commercial vehicle enforcement officers from Alpharetta, Roswell and Winder assisted the Milton Police Department with a commercial vehicle safety checkpoint in the City of Milton. Twenty-six commercial vehicles were subjected to various levels of inspections.

Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officers issued 18 citations for violations, placed 11 vehicles out of service for serious infractions, arrested four drivers and placed four drivers out of service, preventing them from operating a commercial vehicle for a period of time.

The Alpharetta DPS also held a multi-agency safety checkpoint in Alpharetta with officers from the Georgia State Patrol, Gwinnett County Police, Sandy Springs Police and the Dawson County Sheriff's Office.

During this checkpoint, 1,018 vehicles were checked.

Atlanta Bread Among Top 5 Healthiest Fast Food Options

SMYRNA, GA -- In the recently released 2010 Zagat Fast Food Survey, which included 136 national restaurant chains, Atlanta Bread received top five distinctions in two key categories.

The survey's more than 6,500 participants voted Atlanta Bread among the top five large chains (places with less than 5,000 locations) in the Healthy Options and Facilities categories. This is the second straight year that Atlanta Bread placed among the top five chains in these two categories.
