Another weekend of minimal road construction

Another weekend of minimal road construction

(WXIA) -- You'll see less construction than usual on Atlanta's interstates and highways this weekend -- and you have the Braves to thank for it.

Due to Friday's home opener at Turner Field, as well as spring break, the Georgia Department of Transportation has suspended its typical weekend roadwork.

No lane closures will take place on the surface streets around Turner Field. However, emergency-related closures are always a possibility.

Residents encouraged to include fire safety in spring cleaning efforts

Residents encouraged to include fire safety in spring cleaning efforts

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- While you are working hard to clean your home this spring, the Fulton County Fire Rescue Department wants you to remember to check your home’s smoke alarms to make sure they are working and to review fire safety with the entire family.

“Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility,” said Chief Larry Few of the Fulton County Fire Rescue Department. “As you are spring cleaning, why not make sure to review your fire protection plan with your family and, please test your smoke alarm batteries.”

According to the United States Fire Safety Administration (UFSA), in less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. The following tips will help you have a fire safe spring:

• Test your smoke alarms, and replace any alarms that are 10 years old or older.

• Test your carbon monoxide alarms, and replace any alarms that are 7 years old or older.

• Check your dryer vents and clean the hosing.

GDOT to limit roadwork for 2 weekends

(WXIA) -- Here's some good news for spring breakers and Atlanta Braves fans: road construction will be limited for the next two weekends.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced Wednesday it will close fewer interstate lanes than usual from midnight on Friday, Apr. 3 to 5 a.m. on Monday, Apr. 6. The construction break is meant to accommodate drivers who are heading into or out of Atlanta for spring break and Easter weekend.

Lane closures will also be limited from 10 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 10 to 5 a.m. on Monday, Apr. 13, for the Braves' opening weekend at Turner Field.

Traffic throughout Georgia is expected to be heavy both weekends, and drivers are asked to be cautious.

"Also, incident management or emergency maintenance-related lane closures could become necessary on any time on any route," GDOT director of construction Jeff Baker said.
