9 Fulton high schools among nation's best

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Nine Fulton County high schools have made this year's Washington Post list of the top high schools in the U.S.

Every year, the High School Challenge list spotlights 1,900 of the country's more than 22,000 high schools. The rankings are based on total student participation in rigorous coursework and exams.

"It's exceptional that so many of our schools are being recognized for their academic rigor, but there's still more that we can do to challenge students," Fulton County Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Avossa said in a statement. "It should be our goal that every high school in Fulton County be recognized on the High School Challenge list."

'Spring Market' brings arts, crafts to Autrey Mill

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- "Spring Market at the Mill" is returning to Johns Creek on Saturday, April 27 from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Held at the Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center, vendor and crafters will be selling natural and manmade beauty products near the Pole Barn and in the Program Barn. Those who attend can choose from natural soaps, hand-woven shawls and scarves, jewelry, watercolor works and vintage glass made into everyday use. 

"We held our first market last winter, and had a great response from the community. We're excited to offer it again while the Preserve is in full bloom," Claudette Lopez, heritage and event coordinator for Autrey Mill said.

Men who were homeless to guide young commissioners to locations used by the homeless

Fulton County Youth Commissioners will distribute Care Boxes to the homeless on Saturday, April 20, 2013.  The  H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Everyday) Boxes will be provided to homeless citizens in Atlanta and Fulton between 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.  Youth Commissioners will assemble at the Fulton County Government Center beginning at 8:00 a.m. and distribute H.O.P.E Boxes to locations used by the homeless, primarily in District 5.

Cop recovering after shooting, chase on Ga. 400

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- The officer and perpetrator in Friday night's officer-involved shooting and chase have been identified.

Curtis Hicks, 52, of Marietta shot Alpharetta Police Officer David Freeman five times during a routine traffic stop in downtown Alpharetta.

According to Alpharetta Police, the shooting happened on Main Street in the parking lot of a Christian bookstore. Hicks was stopped by Freeman for an expired tag before he opened fire.

Nearby is a DUI school where instructor Lynn Hayes said she and her students heard the string of gunfire. Fellow officers rushed to aid Freeman, and found he had been shot several times.  

Police later confirmed Freeman took five gun shots -- wounds to his left shoulder, right elbow, the lower abdomen, the left leg above the knee and a bullet-graze on his back.

Golden Games to begin May 1

ROSWELL, Ga. -- The 19th annual North Fulton Golden Games will begin next month, and it's not too late to sign up to participate in the fun.

The Golden Games give north Fulton County residents over age 50 the opportunity to engage in a little friendly competition. Events range from bowling to mahjong, diving to tennis, softball to track and field.

Opening ceremonies will be held Wednesday, May 1 at 9:30 a.m. at Newtown Park in Johns Creek. The Games will wrap up on Thursday, May 23 at 10 a.m. at the Helene Mills Senior Multipurpose Center in Sandy Springs.

Visit roswellslc.org to sign up for the Golden Games and get more information about this year's events. Registration is $15 and includes most games, a T-shirt and a picnic lunch on opening day. Additional costs include $10 for bowling, $10 for bocce and $45 for a May 14 golf tournament at the Alpharetta Athletic Club.
