Georgia High School Football Playoffs: 4A Preview
News

CLASS 4A

Favorite: Clarke Central

Predicted Final Four: Flowery Branch, Chattahoochee, Northside-Warner Robins, Clarke Central

Easiest Draw: Chattahoochee. Chattahoochee's matchups are favorable because of the types of teams they will play. Up until the quarterfinals, the Cougars should be able to outscore whoever the face.

Toughest Draw: Flowery Branch. Of all of the three seeds in 4A, Southwest DeKalb is the one with the best shot at beating Flowery Branch. If the Falcons survive that, they get to play undefeated Kell in the second round.

Best Round One Matchups:

-Flowery Branch vs. Southwest DeKalb... Flowery Branch will have to win a tough fight if they want to beat Southwest DeKalb. The Falcons moved up to 4A this year, but still won their first nine games. Southwest DeKalb's only losses were to Tucker and Marist, but if they were to have played Marist a few weeks later, the Panthers' record would probably stand at 9-1. That is not bad for a three seed.

-Thomas County Central vs. Dutchtown... Thomas County Central is the more established power, but Dutchtown's defense has been awfully good this year. It will be interesting to see how Thomas County Central's offense matches up with the Bulldogs' D. The Yellow Jackets' only losses are to Cairo and Northside-Warner Robins. Dutchtown has only lost to Griffin.

-Chattahoochee vs. Pope... Chattahoochee is 10-0 and none of their games have even really been close. However, only three of those games were against plus-.500 teams. 7-3 Pope looks to be the best team the Cougars have played since Lambert in their season opener.

-North Clayton vs. Ware County... North Clayton's defense has racked up five shutouts and the Eagles' only loss was to Lovejoy in overtime this season. Ware County is 8-2, having lost a 3-0 game to 5A Lowndes and a one-score game to 7-3 Brunswick.

-Clarke Central vs. Mays... Clarke Central has been one of 4A's most dominant teams, but now they face Mays, one of 4A's best four seeds. The two teams met in last year's postseason and Mays played Clarke Central close.

A Quick Look Back: Though Lambert is in its first full varsity season, the young school is a two seed. The Longhorns went 4-0 last season and they are currently 8-2.

A Quick Look Forward: If both Kell and Flowery Branch win their first round games, they play each other in Round Two. Neither team was in 4A last season; Kell was in 5A and Flowery Branch was in 3A.

Random Note: The upper left quarter bracket is not easy to predict. Flowery Branch, Southwest DeKalb, Kell, and Griffin all have a legitimate shot at the Final Four.
