LOCAL PROFILE: The LGBT Community in Atlanta

ATLANTA -- According to The Advocate, the U.S. based national gay and lesbian newsmagazine, Atlanta holds the title of “America’s gayest city” and Gay Atlanta, a subsidiary of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau says that Atlanta is the “epicenter of the LGBT South” but according to Phillip Rafshoon of Outwrite Bookstore, Atlanta is just a “progressive city in a conservative state, that’s in a conservative region of the United States. The city serves as a place where people from small, southern towns can come to be who they want to be” which is why the LGBT community loves to call this city, home.

In the nook that is Tenth Street and Piedmont Road, Outwrite Bookstore has been a staple in the Atlanta LGBT community for about 18 years.

LOCAL PROFILE: Indie Film Scene

LOCAL PROFILE: Indie Film Scene

ATLANTA, Ga. – Atlanta has come to be known as the home of young professionals, performing arts professionals and indie artists. The city that was once a breeding ground for hip-hop trends has become a haven of the aesthetic arts and artists alike.

Recently, while searching for this thriving indie artist scene in the city that is home to large-scale Tyler Perry Studios, I stumbled upon a “somewhat dormant” subculture lying low in the middle of town; it’s Atlanta’s Underground Art scene.

Just like movie buffs, members of world want to claim they were the first to see the most recent and popular cult indie films, films like “Reservoir Dogs” or “Requiem for a Dream”. Well, in Atlanta, artists can experience that excitement by visiting their local independent theatre. These theatres in most cases, have been around for 20 years, or more, are home to many of the most artistically gifted and innovative people in town.

Fulton County among best places for music education

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County has been recognized for the 12th year in a row as one of the best places to live for music education.

Only two school systems in the nation have received the honor every time the annual national survey has been given.

Released this week, the "Best Communities for Music Education" list represents an annual snapshot of music education at its best. It is based on a survey conducted by the NAMM Foundation and several partner organizations in the fields of music and education.

NAMM is a not-for-profit international association that represents the musical instruments and products industry.

"Fulton is well known locally and nationally for its music programs," said Superintendent Cindy Loe.
