Shop with a Cop returns for Alpharetta children

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Alpharetta's Police Athletic League (PAL) will sponsor its 13th annual Shop with a Cop event this week.

With exceptionally high unemployment in Metro Atlanta, this year's event is more significant than ever, according to Officer Phil Ritchey with Alpharetta Police.

Shop with a Cop takes local children whose families cannot afford to give them a proper holiday celebration, and pairs them up with police officers, firefighters and community volunteers for a shopping extravaganza.

Each child may spend up to $100 during the event, which will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at the Alpharetta Walmart. PAL plans to help at least 100 children this season.

Despite the money being for them, many of the children opt to spend their $100 on gifts for parents and siblings, Ritchey said.
