ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- A group from Congregation Gesher L'Torah (GLT) recently pitched in to help with tornado cleanup efforts in Alabama.

On May 22, the volunteers met with Nechama, a Jewish disaster relief organization, in Pratt City, just outside Birmingham.

The group made its way past splintered houses along devastated streets; the sheer destruction was unlike anything anyone had ever seen before.

After a few minutes of staring in awe at the scene about them, the GLT volunteers dug right in and began cleaning up the debris left by the ravaging tornado.

Piece by piece, they took apart and moved an entire house where the family had survived by huddling under the front stairs. The stairs were the only thing left standing in a huge pile of rubble.

GLT Rabbi Michael Bernstein took part in the cleanup.

"We had a great group of all ages, did very important work and made a real statement about what it means to be part of Gesher L'Torah," he said.

Members of Nechama have been cleaning up flood and tornado damage every day so far this year.
