Fulton County Fire Rescue advises residents to maintain smoke alarms

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in properties without working smoke alarms. A properly installed and maintained smoke alarm is the first thing in a home that can alert families to a fire 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“Whether you're awake or asleep, a working smoke alarm is constantly on alert, scanning the air for fire and smoke,” says Fire Chief Larry Few of the Fulton County Fire Rescue Department. “As firefighters, we continually remind residents to check their smoke alarms to ensure they are working properly.”

CUMMING, Ga. -- Help adoptive and foster children in Forsyth County by running a colorful 5K this weekend.

Color Outside the Lines 5K covers participants in colorful powder as they tear through the course. It is fun and safe for runners of all ages.

The race will be held Saturday, July 12 at 8 a.m. at the Cumming Fairgrounds. Packet pick-up will be July 11 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Sports Authority in the Mansell Crossing shopping center near North Point Mall.

Race finishers will be treated to a celebration featuring music, food and a giant paint throw. All runners will receive technical T-shirts, while awards will be given to the top finishers in each age group.

Kroger raises $232K for Children's Miracle Network

(WXIA) -- Kroger customers in metro Atlanta recently showed that they are a charitable bunch.

During the final two weeks in May, shoppers raised $232,000 for the Children's Miracle Network through the Miracle Balloons promotion.

For only $1, a customer could purchase a paper balloon to hang in a local Kroger. All proceeds from the fundraiser went directly to Children's Miracle Network hospitals and health networks, such as Children's Hospital of Georgia in Augusta and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

"Kroger customers consistently show their care for our communities by constantly going above and beyond with their charitable donations," Glynn Jenkins, spokesperson for Kroger's Atlanta division, said in a release. "Through their support of the Miracle Balloons program, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of children."

Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center to open June 19

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County Commissioner Emma I. Darnell, District 5, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners and Fulton County Arts and Culture, will celebrate the Grand Opening of the Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center (ACCC) on Thursday, June 19 at 10 a.m.

The grand opening celebration will kick off three days of activities organized to introduce the new facility to the community and increase awareness of the center, its programming and activities. 

The center is located at 3900 Aviation Circle, Atlanta on the grounds of Fulton County Airport – Brown Field.  It is designed as a community gathering place and will focus on the following types of programming:

(WXIA) -- Metro Atlanta residents who are interested in having more butterflies and hummingbirds in their gardens are invited to attend a free workshop at Pike Nurseries.

The Atlanta-based nursery chain will offer two Attracting Butterflies and Hummingbirds to Your Garden classes.

An adult-centered class will be held Saturday, June 7 at 9 a.m. at all Pike locations. A second session designed especially for kids will take place Wednesday, June 11 at 1 p.m. Both events are free.

Attendees will learn planting techniques and the types of flowering plants they should include in their gardens to bring in some new feathered and fluttering friends. Children in the Wednesday class will also make butterfly crafts.

Local restaurants make 5 Make-a-Wish dreams come true

Local restaurants make 5 Make-a-Wish dreams come true

(WXIA) -- Diners at two metro Atlanta-based restaurant chains had a hand in making wishes come true for five very special children.

Throughout March and April, J. Christopher's and Reveille Café customers donated more than $47,000 to the Make-a-Wish organizations in Georgia and Middle Tennessee. Make-a-Wish grants surprises to children living with life-threatening medical conditions.

Thanks to the diners' generosity, Make-a-Wish was able to send five kids on trips of a lifetime:

Andrea, age 3
Hematologic (blood) disorder
Andrea got to go to Disney World and meet her idols -- Mickey and Minnie; Peter Pan and Tinkerbell; Pluto and Goofy.

Bryce, age 4
Wilms' tumor (kidney cancer)
Bryce got to fly on a plane to Disney World, ride the rides and meet Mickey Mouse.

Elijah, age 8
Respiratory condition
Elijah took an "absolutely awesome" trip to Disney World.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County Senior Multipurpose Facilities will host Community Days in May in observance of Older Americans Month 2014.
