Fulton County Health Services urges residents to use preventive measures to deter mosquito growth in their neighborhoods.  West Nile Virus (WNV) can cause a serious illness and is transmitted from mosquitoes to humans.  The occurrence of this virus increases in the summer and continues into the fall. 

“We are in the season for increased mosquito activity,” says Patrice A. Harris, MD, Director of Fulton County Health Services.  “It is important for everyone to use preventive measures to protect themselves and their families against the virus.”

Fulton County Health Services to sponsor back to school immunization rush sites

ATLANTA -- The new school year is set to start August 12, 2013 for Fulton County Public Schools and August 7th for Atlanta Public Schools. The Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness will kick-off the Back to School Immunization Rush on Monday, July 29, 2013.  This year's immunization and vision and hearing screenings will be held at three points of dispensing (PODS).

“On July 29, our Nursing Division will focus on giving vaccinations, eye-ear-dental screenings and the required certifications for children to attend school,” says Patrice A. Harris, MD, Director of Fulton County Health Services. 

Accepted Forms of Payment include: Visa and Mastercard, Cash, Medicaid, United HealthCare and CIGNA. For financial assistance, clients must present proof of income. Non-Fulton County residence will be charged the full fee for services.

ROSWELL, Ga. -- North Fulton Hospital is now offering a revolutionary, minimally invasive spine surgery.

The advanced procedure uses a Mazor robot to perform surgeries with small incisions, shorter hospital visits and faster recovery.

"We are very excited that North Fulton Hospital will be one of the first hospitals in the Atlanta area to have the Mazor robot and to be able to offer this kind of surgery to adults," hospital CEO Deborah Keel said in a statement. "This is an outstanding technology. The Mazor robot provides the potential for less pain and quicker recoveries."

ROSWELL, Ga. -- Elizabeth Lister, a registered nurse at North Fulton Hospital, received April's DAISY Award for Nursing.

The national honor is given monthly to nurses who go above and beyond in their jobs every single day.

Lister was nominated for the DAISY Award by one of her patients.

"Elizabeth made a wonderful lasting impression that I will always remember," the patient said. "Around the clock, she was very compassionate and reassuring, and she took the time to establish a caring relationship with me, attending to my every need. North Fulton Hospital has an extraordinary professional in the Surgical Care Unit!"

Lister has worked for the Roswell hospital since 2011. Alex Peterson, clinical manager of surgical nursing at the hospital, praised her caring and professionalism.

Fulton County Health Services encourages residents to learn their status on National HIV Testing Day

ATLANTA -- The Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness will recognize National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) on Friday, June 27 by offering free HIV/STI testing and counseling at three locations.

The NHTD is an annual campaign to encourage all individuals to “Take the Test Take Control” in order to know their HIV status.  Knowing your status helps to keep you, your family and your community safe from sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV.

Free and confidential HIV/STI testing is available at the following locations:

Merrell, Life Time Fitness invite Georgians to free fitness classes

(WXIA) -- Shoe and clothing brand Merrell, along with national fitness center Life Time Fitness are holding upcoming fitness classes around Atlanta, free of charge for anyone who attends. 

All classes, "Outisde Fitness Powered by Merrell," are held at various Life Time Fitness locations. As a spokesperson said, the classes are taught by certified personal trainers, and follow a boot camp format. 

Participating Life Time locations include Alpharetta, north Atlanta, Johns Creek, Peachtree Corners, Sugarloaf and Woodstock Mountain Brook. Classes are held three times per week, and run from June 1 - August 30.
