Local Spanish Teacher Honored
Anabel Brcek, a Spanish teacher at First Montessori School of Atlanta and an Alpharetta resident, has been selected as an 11Alive Class Act teacher. Each year a station panel selects 30 elite teachers from among more than 300 nominations submitted by the public.   Teachers are chosen based on several factors, including subject matter knowledge, positive attitude, love of teaching, ability to unlock student minds and persistence in giving his or her personal best to the profession.   Born in Venezuela, Brcek earned a bachelor's degree in early childhood education from Universidad Metropolitana in Caracas, Venezuela. She has nearly 20 years of classroom experience.   "When I went to school, you just sat with a book, listened to the teacher and watched the board," said Brcek. She teaches young children individually and older kids in small groups.   "I want to do games with them and talk to them," Brcek continued. "The kids enjoy the way I teach. I get positive energy from them. I try to be a friend as well as a teacher."   "Anabel thinks I hired her because she's Montessori trained and a native speaker," said Jerri King, Head of School at First Montessori School of Atlanta. "I hired Anabel because she's Anabel. The difference between our Spanish program and any other is her. She brings such passion and energy to her work."   Many First Montessori School of Atlanta students are learning Spanish as a third language. King explained, "It really takes relationships, passion and compassion to build that language bridge. Anabel is very engaged one-on-one with the students. As they grow up, she builds on that relationship. She accepts their level of challenge and makes it very comfortable for them to learn."   "I want my students to learn to respect and appreciate other cultures," Brcek added. "I want them to understand that there's another world out there. Don't be afraid to learn another language."   Located at 5750 Long Island Drive, First Montessori School of Atlanta is the Southeast's first Montessori School. It serves the needs of children ages 18 months to 14 years. .
