Avalon holding job fair Monday

ROSWELL, Ga. -- Avalon, the new mixed-use development in Alpharetta, is holding a major job fair Monday evening.

It will be at Roswell United Methodist Church, 814 Mimosa Boulevard, from 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. A free hot dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. in the church's Fellowship Hall.

Avalon needs to hire about 4,000 people to staff its shops and restaurants. A complete list of participating employers can be found at rumc.com.

The event is free to attend. Job seekers should wear business attire and bring several copies of their resumes.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Voter Education is an essential non-partisan comprehensive approach to providing the citizens of Fulton County with vital information and data to enhance the voter experience.

The Department of Registration and Elections regularly partners with civic, business and religious organizations to conduct voter registration drives. Groups interested in scheduling a drive can contact the Department of Registration and Elections by phone 404-612-7020 or by fax 404-730-7024.

Weekend traffic: Another mess on I-285

(WXIA) -- Last week's break from interstate roadwork was short-lived. The Georgia Department of Transportation said crews will be back on the roads this weekend.

Interstate 285, especially the portion above I-20, will be GDOT's main focus, as several projects are scheduled for that corridor.

As always, all work is weather-permitting.

Clayton/Fulton counties
* 1 Outer Loop lane of I-285 will be closed at I-75 south from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for resurfacing
* 1 outside lane of I-285 will be closed at I-85 north from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge repairs

Cobb County
* 2 northbound and 2 southbound lanes of I-285 will be closed between South Cobb Drive and Paces Ferry Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for concrete slab replacement
* Pacing will occur at the I-285 Kennedy Interchange with I-75 overnight Saturday

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The deadline to register to vote in the November 4 General Election is Monday, October 6.

Online voter registration is available, which allows new voters to complete the entire process online at www.fultonelections.com. In Fulton County, residents can register to vote online, at their city hall, the Georgia Department of Driver Services, any Atlanta Fulton County Library Branch, at one of the three registration and elections offices or by mail.

“We have seen increased activity in new registrations," said Richard Barron, Director of Fulton county Registration and Elections. “We want to ensure that everyone that wishes to participate is given the opportunity to do so."

Residents can also obtain a voter registration form at one of three County offices:

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. -- Whole Foods will hold information sessions this week for those who are interested in working at its newest Atlanta-area location.

The grocery chain hopes to hire between 50 and 100 team members for the store in Alpharetta's Avalon development.

Potential employees are invited to attend one of five information sessions on Thursday, Sept. 4. Pre-registration is required and must be completed no later than 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 3. Email your name and contact information to cynthia.crowder@wholefoods.com to sign up.

Fulton County Fire Rescue offers Labor Day BBQ fire safety tips

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Labor Day is a time for barbeques. It can also be a time of extreme fire danger. According to the United States Fire Administration (USFA) almost 5,000 Americans are injured each year by charcoal/wood-burning and propane grill fires.

“As residents continue to enjoy the summer, we want to remind them to practice safety tips as they are barbequing and camping,” said Chief Larry Few, Fulton County Fire Rescue Department. “We want everyone to safely enjoy the holiday.”

Summertime should be a time for fun and making happy memories. Knowing a few fire safety tips and following instructions will help everyone have a safe summer:

Office of Children and Youth needs volunteers

HAPEVILLE, Ga. -- The Fulton County Call to Womanhood programs, Priceless University and the Youth Leadership Academy for Girls need volunteer academic tutors in math, science and reading.

Volunteer tutors will support the students in the Call to Womanhood programs during meetings beginning in September at the Call to Womanhood Center located at 3444 Claire Drive, Hapeville, next to the Hapeville Library.

Priceless University is a college-prep and career development program for middle and high school girls between the ages of 12 and 17. The program focuses on self-enrichment and self-development courses that help students reach their full potential.  Priceless University meets every Tuesday evening from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Call to Womanhood Center.
