Governor commends Georgia's new Master Teachers

ATLANTA -- Governor Nathan Deal has announced the names of 86 Georgia teachers who have earned "Master Teacher" certification.

This distinction is based on demonstrated excellence in student achievement and growth for 2011.

"I am proud of Georgia's Master Teachers for their tireless efforts to enrich the minds and lives of our students and for their ongoing work toward reaching our state's goal of providing a high-quality teacher in every classroom," said Gov. Deal.

Keynote speaker named for 'Eggs & Enterprise' breakfast

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Brandon Beach, president and CEO of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, announced that John A. Bardis will be the keynote speaker for the Chamber's Eggs & Enterprise breakfast.

The meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 24 at Roswell's Doubletree Hotel (1075 Holcomb Bridge Road, 30076). It will be sponsored by Chamber members North Fulton Hospital and Verizon.

Bardis is chairman, president and CEO of MedAssets. He has served in his present capacity since the company's founding in June 1999.

Bardis has over 20 years experience in the healthcare industry.

WEEKEND EVENTS: Atlanta Gives Back, Pet Parade, Dead Prez

ATLANTA – There are tons of fun events going on this weekend, in your area. We’ve listed a few of them for you to check out with your family and friends.

Join 11Alive and the Atlanta Humane Society for the 21st Annual Pet Parade on Saturday, May 7. The parade starts at Piedmont Park at 11:00 a.m. and features 11Alive’s own, John Gerard and Chesley McNeil as the Grand Marshalls. Registration for pets starts at 9:00 a.m. and the event ends around 1:00 p.m. Registration for a pet and a parent is $35, on Saturday morning. Piedmont Park is located at 1071 Piedmont Avenue in Atlanta.

Revolutionary hip-hop duo, Dead Prez will headline a concert at Masquerade on Friday, May 6. The two-some, composed of stic.man and M-1 are known for their “raw” and “in-your-face” style of lyricism.

11Alive morning team gives teachers 'Our Favorite Things'

ATLANTA -- 11Alive's morning team rolled out the red carpet Monday morning to honor Metro Atlanta's "Class Act" teachers. The 31 men and women were nominated by their peers and students for special recognition for their committment to their classes and students.


On Monday, the 31 educators, their principals and some family and friends joined the 11Alive morning team as a live studio audience.

Chambliss applauds Georgia's charter schools

ATLANTA -- United States Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-Georgia) has expressed his support for Georgia's charter schools and applauded those working to expand the charter system on behalf of children, families and communities across the state.

The week of May 2 is National Charter Schools Week.

"Georgia's excellent charter school sector continues to raise the bar for educational standards, and I applaud the Georgia Charter Schools Association for their commitment to education," said Sen. Chambliss. "Charter schools' emphasis on empowering parents with public school choice, innovation and local control provide quality alternatives for many families, and they give our students a good foundation to succeed.

Milton High French instructor named Fulton Teacher of the Year

MILTON, Ga. -- The Fulton County School System is proud to announce that Shelby Steinhauer is the district's Teacher of the Year for 2011-2012.

Steinhauer, who teaches French at Milton, was delivered the news on Wednesday, Apr. 27 during a surprise announcement at the school.

Each spring, Fulton County schools are invited to nominate outstanding educators based on teacher, staff and parent input.

These professionals are then evaluated a second time, and one Elementary, Middle and High School Teacher of the Year is announced. From these final three educators, one is chosen as Overall Teacher of the Year.

The system's Elementary School Teacher of the Year is Franklin Burns from Spalding Drive Charter Elementary.

School board to approve new superintendent

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The Fulton County Board of Education will meet on Tuesday, Apr. 26 to vote on its superintendent finalist.
