Georgia Connections Academy names first principal

ATLANTA -- Georgia Connections Academy (GACA) has announced that Heather Robinson has been appointed as principal for the new statewide virtual charter school.

GACA is the state's first full-time virtual character school and will serve students in grades K-12 from across Georgia.

The school was recently approved by the Georgia Charter School Commission. Enrollment began on Friday, Apr.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Tickets are now on sale for Dolly Parton's Wednesday, Aug. 3 concert at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park (2200 Encore Parkway, Alpharetta, 30009).

The box office opened at 10 a.m. on Friday, Apr. 1. Tickets range in price from $29 to $99 and may be purchased through the amphitheatre's box office or Ticketmaster.

Dolly Parton is the most honored female country performer of all time, with 25 RIAA certified gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards. She has had a record 25 songs reach number 1 on the Billboard Country charts, 41 career top 10 albums and 110 career charted singles.

The Aug. 3 concert is part of Parton's "Better Day" tour.

Ridgeview Charter School names new principal

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- The Fulton County School System has announced that Lisa Hastey will be the new principal of Ridgeview Charter School in Sandy Springs.

She will succeed principal Karen Cox, who joined the district's central office in February.

Hastey joined the administrative team at Alpharetta's Webb Bridge Middle School in 2006; before that, she was an administrative assistant at North Springs Charter High School in Sandy Springs. She has also taught social studies at Milton High School, as well as schools in Cobb County and Fairfax, Va.

Hastey earned a bachelor's degree in government from the College of William and Mary. After graduating, she pursued her interest in politics by serving as a staff member on two committees in the U.S. Senate.

After a six-year stint on Capitol Hill, Hastey moved to the educational arena and earned a master's degree in secondary education from George Washington University.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Lisa McMann, author of the bestselling Wake trilogy (Wake, Fade and Gone), has written a new young adult novel, Cryer's Cross.

She will give a talk and sign copies of her books at Barnes & Noble at Mansell Crossings (7660 Northpoint Parkway, Alpharetta, 30022) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 22.

Cryer's Cross is about a young woman named Kendall, who loves her life in a small Montana town but still longs for something more.

Alpharetta Elementary principal retires

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- An impromptu farewall parade was held at Alpharetta Elementary School for Pat Reed on Friday, Mar. 11.

Reed, the principal, is retiring this school year. She was pleasantly surprised when her students lined the hallways to give her cards, handshakes and hugs as they wished her well.

Ellen Knouse, a retired Fulton County principal, will be the interim principal of Alpharetta Elementary until a replacement can be found.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Each member of the Fulton County Board of Education sponsors a monthly meeting open to all members of the community.

The sessions provide an opportunity for direct contact with community members and give board members a chance to listen to local issues and concerns.
