Manning Oaks Elementary students win state technology fair

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- Two third graders at Manning Oaks Elementary School in Alpharetta took home the top prize in the 2011 Georgia Educational Technology Fair.

Natasha Havanur and Saikishore Mettupalli placed first at the third and fourth grade level of the competition, which took place on Saturday, Mar. 12 at Howard High School in Macon.

The students created a website, Why to Stay Healthy, for the Web 2.0 Internet Applications category.

Projects were judged on originality, documentation and the contestants' ability to explain their work to a panel of judges. The Manning Oaks students were commended for their site's informative content and colorful design.

Alpharetta Elementary principal retires

ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- An impromptu farewall parade was held at Alpharetta Elementary School for Pat Reed on Friday, Mar. 11.

Reed, the principal, is retiring this school year. She was pleasantly surprised when her students lined the hallways to give her cards, handshakes and hugs as they wished her well.

Ellen Knouse, a retired Fulton County principal, will be the interim principal of Alpharetta Elementary until a replacement can be found.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Each member of the Fulton County Board of Education sponsors a monthly meeting open to all members of the community.

The sessions provide an opportunity for direct contact with community members and give board members a chance to listen to local issues and concerns.

ALPHARETTA, GA -- "The Surry with the Fringe on Top" is preparing to stop in Alpharetta.

Oklahoma!, the rollicking musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, will be presented at Alpharetta High School (3595 Webb Bridge Road, 30005) in March.

Set during the turn of the 20th century, Oklahoma! tells the story of Laurey, a winsome farm girl, and the two men who love her -- a handsome cowboy named Curly and a sinister hired farmhand named Jud Fry.

Bethany Bend High School Names First Principal

MILTON, GA -- Roswell High School principal Ed Spurka will become the first principal of Fulton County's newest high school.

The school board approved his appointment at its Tuesday, Feb. 15 work session.

The new high school is currently under construction on Bethany Bend in Milton. It is scheduled to open in August of 2012.

"Dr. Spurka's longtime leadership in the North Fulton community is an asset for opening a new high school. He is an enthusiastic, passionate and decisive leader, and these qualities are essential," said Fulton County Schools Superintendent Cindy Loe. "I am also pleased to announce Jerome Huff as his successor at Roswell. Mr. Huff is a well-known and well-respected member of the Roswell community.
