Milton introduces, seeks staff for two new summer camps

MILTON, Ga. -- Planning is in full swing for the City of Milton's two new summer day camps.

Open registration for both sessions -- Camp Bethwell and Camp Joyful Soles -- will begin Wednesday, Mar. 16 and Thursday, Mar. 17, respectively.

Camp Bethwell is a traditional day camp for children ages six to 12. Campers can expect to engage in plenty of fun activities, including arts and crafts, drama, treasure hunts, fitness games and more.

Registration for Camp Bethwell begins at 5:30 p.m. on Mar. 16 in suite 107G of City Hall (13000 Deerfield Parkway, 30004). It will continue during regular business hours after that day.

The camp itself will be at the newly renovated Bethwell Community Center (2695 Hopewell Road, 30004) from Monday, June 6 to Friday, Aug. 5 (with no session the week of July 4), 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Space is limited to 30 children.

DVR Captures Woman's $20,000 Lottery Win

ALPHARETTA, GA -- Carol Strickland first heard through the grapevine that she'd won the lottery.

Her DVR confirmed it.

Strickland, 58, won a $20,000 prize from the Wednesday, Feb. 16 $3,000,000 Taxes Paid Weekly Extra Chance drawing.

The Alpharetta grandmother submitted her non-winning Georgia Lottery $3,000,000 Taxes Paid instant ticket for the additional drawing.

On Feb. 16, she received a phone call from her daughter, saying she'd won a prize.

"Then we wound the DVR back just so we could see it," she said. "I was very excited."

Strickland and her husband, Charles, have two adult children and two grandchildren. They intend to pay bills with the prize money.

"We're going to have fun with it, too," Strickland said.

Golf Tournament to Benefit Prostate Cancer Coalition

ROSWELL, GA -- An upcoming charity golf tournament will benefit the Georgia Prostate Cancer Coalition, a non-profit organization founded by prostate cancer survivors and support groups in Metro Atlanta.

The tournament will be Monday, Apr. 4 at Country Club of Roswell (2500 Club Springs Drive, 30076). A $125 entry fee is due Friday, Mar. 11 and can be sent to:

Alpharetta Elementary Hosts Bowling for Brownies

ALPHARETTA, GA -- On Thursday, Jan. 20, Alpharetta Elementary School hosted a bowling event for a very special group of Girl Scouts.

Troop 10513, Alpharetta Elementary's special needs troop, enjoyed the opportunity to participate in "Bowling for Brownies," a fun team-building exercise created especially for them.

With assistance from parents and other scouts, the members of Troop 10513 rolled balls to knock down six plastic pins at the end of a bowling carpet.

Fifty Girl Scouts who attended the event also showed their community spirit by bringing mittens and gloves to donate to North Fulton Community Charities.

Alpharetta Elementary Students Have 'Heart'

ALPHARETTA, GA -- Alpharetta Elementary School hosted its 12th annual Jump Rope for Heart event on Thursday, Jan. 20 and Friday, Jan. 21.

Students in all grades had a great time jumping for a cause. In all, the school raised $5,500 for the American Heart Association, far surpassing its goal of $5,000.

Special thanks goes out to all the parent volunteers, especially Michelle Gordon and Molly Mathis, who spread the word and served refreshments during the event.

Nation's Top High School Basketball Players Coming to Alpharetta for 'Hoops in Overdrive'

ALPHARETTA, GA -- The third annual "Hoops in Overdrive" basketball tournament brings 28 teams, 150 Division 1 athletes and some of the nation's brightest talent to Centennial High School (9310 Scott Road, Alpharetta, 30022).

The three-day tournament will take place from Thursday, Dec. 30 to Saturday, Jan. 1 and will welcome the United States' consensus top rated high school senior, Austin Rivers of Winter Park High School in Winter Park, Florida.

The 6'5" Rivers is son of Boston Celtics head coach and NBA legend Doc Rivers.

ALPHARETTA, GA -- Have a used bicycle that's just gathering dust? How about an outgrown bicycle that's going into storage because of a new holiday gift?

Don't get rid of it -- give it to PAL!

The Alpharetta Police Athletics and Activities League (PAL), a non-profit youth organization building leaders for tomorrow, is holding a bike drive at PAL Gym in the Eagle Village Youth Complex behind Alpharetta City Hall (2 Main Street, Alpharetta, 30004).

The aim is to procure enough bicycles for a youth bicycle riding program.

To help, simply bring a gently used bicycle to the PAL Gym on one of two dates:

* Thursday, Jan. 6 -- 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
* Saturday, Jan. 8 -- 10:00 a.m.
