Local women plan benefit on 8/11 for children of the Tuscaloosa tornado

On April 27 Tuscaloosa, Alabama suffered through a massive natural disaster.  A huge tornado ripped through Tuscaloosa, killing 44 and forever changing the lives of thousands of residents.  Immediately after the disaster the city had help from volunteers cleaning up and getting rid of debris, but so much more needed to be done.

Natural disasters are a horrible thing.  They vary in scale and damage; but unless you were directly involved in one-or know someone who was, then you’re unlikely to remember it in a couple of months.    Your life wasn’t affected and things move on; however, dozens, perhaps hundreds of people’s lives were impacted and still need help.

Lee MacDougal, a musician from London, England knew that he wanted to do something and put the ball in motion.  His manager had done some work with Marietta resident Monica Kakhki and the conversation went from there.  Monica then happened to meet Shanna Schwarze, a recent transplant to Atlanta.

Together Monica and Shanna started to plan an event that would go towards purchasing school supplies for elementary school students in Tuscaloosa.  They knew that they had one musician, then they found The Five Spot in Buckhead that offered the space for free and before they knew it, a full on concert benefit started to take shape.  They’ve set up a Facebook page to help people learn more about the event too.

Through networking and word of mouth Waking The BatesMoontower, The Deadfields and Sanjay Kothari all signed up to help the Tuscaloosa Tornado Benefit Show too.  That’s five great bands for only $10 at The Five Spot in Little Five Points on August 11 from 8:00 PM –Midnight.  The event will also have a raffle for some great items including jewelry, a gift certificate for a tattoo, autographed CD from Jason Mraz, an autographed jersey from Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons and a custom Taylor electric classical guitar worth $1,700.  Raffle tickets are only $5 a piece and will be available throughout the night of the benefit.

All of the money is going to purchase school supplies for children in the Tuscaloosa area.  If you’d like to help but can’t attend the event on 8/11, then visit Give Tuscaloosa.    The Five Spot is located at 1123 Euclid Avenue in Little Five Points and The Tuscaloosa Tornado Benefit Show happened on August 11 from 8PM –Midnight.
