ALPHARETTA -- "Hockey Saves" will hold a weekend tournament at The Cooler in Alpharetta with teams featuring Army soldiers and New York City firefighters.

The tournament begins Friday and runs through Sunday, ending with a championship game.

The games are free and open to the public, but donations are encouraged.

Hockey Saves is a group inspired by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2009.

According to the group's website, a few "pushy, outspoken New Yorkers living through the September 11th era" wanted to say thank you with a single pick-up game of hockey.

"This has turned into an organization developed, managed and operated by members of our Military and a few civilians who met on the ice while playing hockey," the website says.

In its first year, Hockey Saves has been able to provide about 300 soldiers and their family members with ice time and tickets to live events. The group has also sent care packages to "hockey playing troops currently in Afghanistan."

The tournament at The Cooler will include solders from Fort Benning and Fort Bragg, players with the FDNY Fire & Ice team and several metro Atlanta men's teams.
