FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Nine Fulton County high schools have made this year's Washington Post list of the top high schools in the U.S.

Every year, the High School Challenge list spotlights 1,900 of the country's more than 22,000 high schools. The rankings are based on total student participation in rigorous coursework and exams.

"It's exceptional that so many of our schools are being recognized for their academic rigor, but there's still more that we can do to challenge students," Fulton County Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Avossa said in a statement. "It should be our goal that every high school in Fulton County be recognized on the High School Challenge list."

Fulton County's top high schools include:

204. Riverwood International Charter School, Sandy Springs
240. Alpharetta High School
263. Milton High School
317. Johns Creek High School
342. Northview High School, Johns Creek
352. Chattahoochee High School, Johns Creek
365. Roswell High School
441. North Springs Charter High School, Sandy Springs
662. Centennial High School, Roswell
